We-Ko-Pa is the course we send groups to when they want to remember they’re playing golf in the middle of the actual desert, not a golf-course neighborhood with a desert theme. Owned and operated by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the property has two 18s, Saguaro and Cholla, and neither one has a single house, condo, or development in view. That’s not marketing copy; it’s the one thing about this course that never changes.
Saguaro, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, is ranked Arizona’s #1 public course by Golfweek: minimalist, walkable, links-inspired desert golf. Cholla, from Scott Miller, plays more dramatically across desert washes and arroyos. Both are worth the drive out past Fort McDowell.
Saguaro vs. Cholla: What Each Is Known For
Saguarois the minimalist one: wide, firm, built to be walked, and routed to put 360-degree mountain views in front of you on nearly every hole. It’s the closest thing to a links round you’ll find in the Valley, and the course groups mention when they say they felt like the only ones out there.
Cholla asks more of you off the tee: target golf across desert washes, more elevation change, a course that rewards shot-shaping over raw length. A $1.8M renovation in 2016 rebuilt the bunkers and greens; conditioning here is consistently some of the best in the Valley.
Green Fees & When to Play
We-Ko-Pa is one of the few Scottsdale-area courses with a published rate card instead of pure dynamic pricing. There are two separate rate tiers, and mixing them up is the most common mistake groups make when they research this course themselves.

How to Play We-Ko-Pa With Scottsdale Luxury Golf
We-Ko-Pa is part of the championship course network we build trips around. We handle the tee time booking on whichever rate tier applies, arrange the drive out and back (it’s the furthest course in the rotation, which is exactly where a private driver pays for itself), and can pair it with a closer round the same trip so you get the full desert-golf experience without losing a day to travel.
Getting There & On-Course Logistics
We-Ko-Pa sits at 18200 E WeKoPa Way in Fort McDowell, about 35 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale via Shea Boulevard.
There’s no caddie program here, but both courses are walkable and the cart is included in your green fee either way. Dress is collared shirts, no denim or cargo shorts.

How much does it cost to play We-Ko-Pa?
We-Ko-Pa runs a published seasonal rate card, cart included: as low as $109 in summer (Jun 15-Aug 27) up to $309 in peak season (Feb 9-Apr 26). Rates step down through the shoulder months. There's a separate, lower AZ-resident rate with ID and a shorter (7-day) booking window; the $129 figure some sites quote is that resident rate for a narrow May/September window, not the general public price. Add 9% tax. Rates as of August 2026; verify at booking.
Saguaro or Cholla, which should we play?
Saguaro is Arizona's #1-ranked public course per Golfweek: a minimalist Coore & Crenshaw links-style desert layout, wide and walkable, the one we send groups to when they want the classic '360-degree desert views, not another golfer in sight' experience. Cholla is more dramatic target golf across desert arroyos and washes. Play both if your trip has the rounds for it; if you only have one, Saguaro is the stronger recommendation for most groups.
Can you walk We-Ko-Pa?
Yes, both courses are walkable and Saguaro was purpose-built for it, though the cart is already included in your green fee either way. There's no caddie or forecaddie program here.
How far is We-Ko-Pa from Scottsdale?
About 35 minutes / 33 miles from Old Town Scottsdale, out past Fort McDowell. It's the furthest course in our regular rotation, but groups consistently say the desert scenery makes the drive worth it.
Is We-Ko-Pa worth it for a group or bachelor trip?
Yes, especially for groups who want a genuine desert-golf experience without another house or development in view anywhere on the course, which is real: We-Ko-Pa has zero real estate on either layout. It's less scene, more golf, so pair it with a livelier day elsewhere if your group wants both.
